About James “Jim” Puente

Jim Puente was appointed Director, Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) in 2009. This position at the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), Chicago is dedicated to the goals of the Compact’s governing body, the Interstate Commission of Nurse Licensure Compact Administrators (ICNLCA). Puente is charged with managing the operations of the NLC, the development of implementation strategies for regulatory compliance and implementation of the Compact strategic plan. Jim has 30 years of experience in the healthcare field.

Puente holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame (South Bend, Indiana), an MS degree in Public Service Management from DePaul University (Chicago) and a Master of Jurisprudence degree in Health Law & Policy from Loyola University School of Law (Chicago). Jim is also a Certified Association Executive (CAE).

National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is an independent, not-for-profit organization through which nursing regulatory bodies act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting public health, safety and welfare, including the development of nursing licensure examinations.

The NLC increases access to care while maintaining public protection at the state level. Under the NLC, nurses can practice in other NLC states, without having to obtain additional licenses.
