About the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency & Indiana Behavioral Health & Human Services Licensing Board

The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency is a state agency that oversees 40 licensing boards and committees. The Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board is a composite board with four sections. The first two established sections, social work and marriage and family therapy, began as a certification board in 1992. In 1998, a licensure law was enacted and added mental health counselors to become the Indiana Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counselor Licensing Board. After a time, the board name changed to the Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board. In 2012, addiction counselors became the fourth board section.
