LOS ANGELES, CA—June 25, 2021—2021—The National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) announces formal support for universal licensing for the US beauty professional community. As part of this initiative, NIC is partnering with Certemy, a leading provider of professional licensing management software, to introduce a new National Credential and a new National Database.

“Universal licensing will help our industry establish national standards for cosmetology education and training while promoting license portability across state lines,” said Susan Colard, Executive Director for NIC. “As the leading advocacy organization for the cosmetology profession, we look forward to helping our industry embrace these new best practices.”

What is the NIC National Credential?

The NIC National Credential will establish a standard national credential for beauty professionals nationwide that meets or exceeds the education and training requirements for any individual state licensing board. The new credential will confirm passing of both written and practical examinations. NIC plans to launch the National Credential in late 2021.

What is the NIC National Database?

The NIC National Database will provide a national registry of all beauty professionals in the United States. The database will include license status and expiration date for each licensed cosmetologist nationwide, plus any license restrictions or disciplinary actions. NIC will provide a simple mechanism for each state board to upload and change data for licensees in their state. Boards, beauty professionals, and employers will be able to perform instant online searches of the database at any time. NIC plans to launch the National Database in late 2022.
